Overview

Yuelu Mountain, standing at just 300.8 meters above sea level, may be a “short” peak, but to locals, climbing it means more than just exercise.
It’s also about enjoying the red maple leaves in autumn, the cool shade in summer, and soaking in the cultural atmosphere of the mountain.

Yuelu Mountain has three main entrances: the South Gate, East Gate, and West Gate.
The South Gate is the most popular. Nearby are many of Changsha’s key attractions, including Hunan University, Dongfanghong Square, snack streets, Aiwan Pavilion, and the historic Yuelu Academy.
The East Gate is next in popularity. It’s where the cable car starts and the luge (slide) ends. The cable car reopened on January 27, 2025, after renovations. Its bright red cabins now form a striking ribbon across the sky. The luge starts from the top of the mountain, and the laughter of riders echoes through the forest—though on holidays, the queues can be a bit tiring and time-consuming.
The West Gate is quieter, with fewer visitors, but it’s convenient for parking, making it a good choice for residents living in Hexi (the local term for areas west of the Xiang River).
Once you reach the summit, looking east you can take in sweeping views of the city, the northbound Xiang River, and the tip of Orange Isle. Looking west, you can see as far as Meixi Lake and Taohua Ridge.
